Frequently asked question: Can you also get diabetes if you do not eat sweets?
Yes, even if you do not eat sweets, you can still get diabetes. There is no one specific cause that gives you diabetes Type 1 or diabetes Type 2. Several factors play a role and those of diabetes Type 1 are different from those of diabetes Type 2.
It is important to note that eating too many sweets or sugary-food does not lead to diabetes Type 1. However, while eating sweets itself does not increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes, ingesting too many calories does increase this risk. When you eat too many calories (energy) through candy, cake, fries and junk food or drink soft drinks (without compensating with regular exercise), the excess energy is stored as fat, which can lead to obesity. If you are obese and do not exercise much you can get diabetes Type 2, especially if you have a genetic predisposition for this.
